Turkey Bowl

Turkey and the Grid Iron: The Tradition of the Turkey Bowl.

The Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving played games as part of their celebration. Children played ring-toss, and blind man’s bluff; adults participated in shooting games or tug-o-war. So, it should be no surprise that our modern Day of Thanks includes that most American of sports, football.

From high school to NCAA and NFL, there are formal games played all day long. Sometimes the matches are traditional, played between two rival teams year after year. However, the heart of this holiday pairing of food and fun may be the neighborhood Turkey Bowl, that informal game played between friends and family as they share the day.

Just like the Thanksgiving feast itself, while the substance is the same, the details vary a little for each Turkey Bowl game. Is it tackle, flag, or touch? Co-Ed or not? Shirts vs. skins?
